The four dollar puzzle you picked up from Goodwill occupied our time for over two weeks.
Blues touching golds overlapping darker blues intertwining reds and whites and lighter blues and browns
and we sat together, inspecting shapes, colors, lines, shadows and shading of the
constellations.
Our puzzle-solving strategies complimented each other. Mostly.
Sometimes, we’d look up at each other,
reflections (possibly) of the golden patterns in our eyes. Or maybe those were there already.
I didn’t look into my own eyes often enough to know.
Sometimes, I’d want to replace the spots on my face with the gold stars that had made their way off the jigsaw into your shades of blue. Another
constellation, if you will. A transformation of hours in front of the mirror to
hours in front of this, right here.
Silence rested comfortably between us, until a joyful
“I’ve been looking for this piece for forever, I can’t believe it was right in front of me this whole time.”
And sometimes, I’d look up, and not believe it either.
